The Touch of Nature Environmental Center in Carbondale, Southern Illinois University's (SIU) innovative outdoor learning site, plans two Trail Stewardship Days on weekends in the fall and needs volunteers for ground clearing to restore and lengthen its trail system.

The 3,100-acre enclave, founded in 1949 in Shawnee National Forest, serves as SIU’s nature-oriented outdoor learning laboratory. Volunteers are needed both to clear existing trails and to fashion new ones on specific dates from September through November.

Cleanup sessions are scheduled from 9 a.m. until noon and 1-4 p.m. on 14 different dates: Sept. 11, 18 and 25; Oct. 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30; and Nov. 5, 6, 12, 13, 19 and 20.

Individuals may sign up for one or both sessions on available days and are asked to pre-register at least 48 hours in advance. To register, call 618-453-1121 or visit www.ton.siu.edu. Participants should dress appropriately for their tasks; tools and instructions will be provided.
