Elverado School District 196 extends contracts for tenured teachers

The board of Elverado Community Unit School District 196 met March 17.

The Elverado CUSD 196 Board of Education meets at 6:00 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month at Elverado High School, 514 S. Sixth St. in Elkville.

Here are the minutes as provided by  Elverado Community Unit School District 196:

The meeting was called to order at: 6:00 p.m. by President Schafer.

1. Members in attendance: Mr. Bernardini, present; Mr. Funk, present; Mr. Keith, present; Mr. Schafer, present; Mrs. Sherman, present; Mr. Wisely, present. Mrs. Jeschke, absent. Others in attendance: Superintendent, Kevin Spain; Principals, Belinda Connor and Jeremy Pierce; Trisha Stewart, Cindy Pierce, Megan Tate, Michelle Berger and Sheila Segelken.

2. A motion was made by Mr. Keith and seconded by Mr. Bernardini to approve the consent agenda of the following items: 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4 and 2.5. Mr. Bernardini, yes; Mr. Funk, yes; Mr. Keith, yes; Mr. Schafer, yes; Mrs. Sherman, yes; Mr. Wisely, yes. Motion carried.

3. During Administrative Reports it was noted that Brooke Whittington qualified for the State 3 point shootout for EHS Basketball team. Also Jacob Cobin received a 1st in piano, Jessica Elson 1st in viola and 2nd in clarinet, and Illyana Lipe a 1st in voice at the IHSA music competition at Carterville on March 5th.

4. A motion was made by Mr. Keith and seconded by Mrs. Sherman to approve Option B of the 2016-2017 Public School Calendar with the first Teacher Institute on August 15 and first day of student attendance on August 16. Mr. Funk, yes; Mr. Keith, yes; Mr. Schafer, yes; Mrs. Sherman, yes; Mr. Wisely, yes; Mr. Bernardini, yes. Motion carried.

5. A motion was made by Mr. Bernardini and seconded by Mr. Wisely to approve the Amended 2015-2016 Public School Calendar. Mr. Keith, yes; Mr. Schafer, yes; Mrs. Sherman, yes; Mr. Wisely, yes; Mr. Bernardini, yes; Mr. Funk, yes. Motion carried.

6. May 13 was set as the Elverado High School graduation date, and May 17 as the Elverado Junior High School graduation date.

7. A motion was made by Mr. Funk and seconded by Mr. Keith to adopt the Resolution to Permanently Transfer $200,000 from the Transportation Fund to the Education Fund. Mr. Schafer, yes; Mrs. Sherman, yes; Mr. Wisely, yes; Mr. Bernardini, yes; Mr. Funk, yes; Mr. Keith, yes. Motion carried.

8. A motion was made by Mr. Bernardini and seconded by Mr. Keith to enter into a Cooperative Agreement between Elverado High School and Murphysboro High school for football during the 2016-2017 & 2017-2018 football seasons, and giving the administration the authority to finalize the terms of the agreement with the Murphysboro administration. Mrs. Sherman, yes; Mr. Wisely, yes; Mr. Bernardini, yes; Mr. Funk, yes; Mr. Keith, yes; Mr. Schafer, yes. Motion carried.

9. A motion was made by Mr. Wisely and seconded by Mrs. Sherman to adjourn to closed session at 6:35 P.M. to discuss: The appointment, employment, compensation, discipline, performance, or dismissal of specific employees of the public body; Collective negotiating matters between the public body and its employees; matters relating to individual students. Mr. Keith, yes; Mr. Schafer, yes; Mrs. Sherman, yes; Mr. Wisely, yes; Mr. Bernardini, yes; Mr. Funk, yes. Motion carried.

10. A motion was made by Mr. Wisely and seconded by Mrs. Keith to return to open session at 7:15 p.m. By voice vote all members voted “yea” to return to open session. No action was taken.

11. The Board discussed a district Athletic handbook and tabled the possible adoption until more information could be gathered, and revisions made.

12. A motion was made by Mr. Bernardini and seconded by Mr. Keith to employ Samantha Lonergan as a Temporary half-time Special Ed. teacher at Step 0 BS+0, and half-time instructional aide retroactive to March 4, 2016, and until the last day of the 2015-2016 school term. Mr. Keith, yes; Mr. Schafer, yes; Mrs. Sherman, yes; Mr. Wisely, yes; Mr. Bernardini, yes; Mr. Funk, yes. Motion carried.

13. A motion was made by Mr. Funk and seconded by Mr. Bernardini to employ Stephen Bridgman as an Instructional Aide. Mr. Schafer, yes; Mrs. Sherman, yes; Mr. Wisely, yes; Mr. Bernardini, yes; Mr. Funk, yes; Mr. Keith, yes. Motion carried.

14. A motion was made by Mr. Wisely and seconded by Mr. Keith to employ Brian Taylor as Elverado High School Assistant Baseball Coach. Mrs. Sherman, yes; Mr. Wisely, yes; Mr. Bernardini, abstain; Mr. Funk, yes; Mr. Keith, yes; Mr. Schafer, yes. Motion carried.

15. A motion was made by Mr. Wisely and seconded by Mrs. Sherman to approve the Honorable Discharge due to Reduction in Force of part-teacher Angel York. Mr. Funk, yes; Mr. Keith, yes; Mr. Schafer, yes; Mrs. Sherman, yes; Mr. Wisely, yes; Mr. Bernardini, yes. Motion carried.

16. A motion was made by Mr. Keith and seconded by Mr. Funk to approve Richard Bernardini as High School volunteer Assistant Baseball Coach. Mr. Keith, yes; Mr. Schafer, yes; Mrs. Sherman, yes; Mr. Wisely, yes; Mr. Bernardini, abstain; Mr. Funk, yes. Motion carried.

17. A motion was made by Mr. Wisely and seconded by Mr. Funk to approve Greg Whittington as high school volunteer Assistant softball Coach. Mr. Keith, yes; Mr. Schafer, yes; Mrs. Sherman, yes; Mr. Wisely, yes; Mr. Bernardini, yes; Mr. Funk, yes. Motion carried.

18. A motion was made by Mr. Bernardini and seconded by Mrs. Sherman to approve employment extension to all tenured teachers for the 2016-2017 School Year. Mr. Wisely, yes; Mr. Bernardini, yes; Mr. Funk, yes; Mr. Keith, yes; Mr. Schafer, yes; Mrs. Sherman, yes. Motion carried.

19. A motion was made by Mr. Bernardini and seconded by Mr. Keith to approve employment extension to Rasheeda Love for the 2016-2017 School Year granting tenure. Mr. Bernardini, yes; Mr. Funk, yes; Mr. Keith, yes; Mr. Schafer, yes; Mrs. Sherman, yes; Mr. Wisely, no. Motion carried.

20. A motion was made by Mr. Wisely and seconded by Mr. Keith to approve a 1st year employment extension to Nicole Heape for the 2016-2017 School. Mrs. Sherman, yes; Mr. Wisely, yes; Mr. Bernardini, yes; Mr. Funk, abstain; Mr. Keith, yes; Mr. Schafer, yes. Motion carried.

21. A motion was made by Mr. Bernardini and seconded by Mr. Funk to approve a one year employment extension to all full-time non-tenured teachers for the 2016-2017 School. Mr. Funk, yes; Mr. Keith, yes; Mr. Schafer, yes; Mrs. Sherman, yes; Mr. Wisely,yes; Mr. Bernardini, yes. Motion carried.

22. A motion was made by Mr. Wisely and seconded by Mr. Bernardini to adjourn at 7:31 p.m. with the next regular meeting scheduled at 6:00 pm on April 21, 2016. All members voted “yea” by voice vote. Motion carried.
