Illinois faces a projected budget deficit of over $3 billion, prompting Senate Republicans to urge Governor J.B. Pritzker to balance the budget without increasing taxes on citizens and businesses. The Governor’s Office of Management and Budget estimates a $3.16 billion shortfall for the upcoming fiscal year, raising questions about how this gap will be addressed.

Governor Pritzker has expanded state spending by more than 30% since taking office, reaching a record $53 billion in the last fiscal year. Senate Republicans have criticized this increase, arguing it turns temporary federal aid into long-term financial obligations for the state. Recently, Pritzker and his allies raised taxes by nearly $1 billion to fund a budget that included benefits for non-citizens.

State Senator Terri Bryant stated that Illinoisans are struggling financially and cannot afford additional tax burdens. She urged the Governor to focus on restoring financial stability in the state rather than personal political ambitions.

In other news, a federal judge in East St. Louis ruled Illinois' assault weapons ban unconstitutional. The ban, enacted in 2023, faced legal challenges from gun owners and advocacy groups. Judge Stephen P. McGlynn granted an injunction but stayed it for 30 days while Attorney General Kwame Raoul filed an appeal.

Senator Bryant expressed hope that efforts would shift towards addressing violence's root causes with stricter enforcement against illegal gun possession and enhanced mental health support.

The fall Veto Session began in Springfield on November 12 with no substantial floor action during its first week. Senate Republicans held a press conference urging Governor Pritzker not to raise taxes amidst the looming deficit.

Additionally, lawmakers recognized veterans during their annual Veterans Day tribute and discussed Senate Bill 3968 concerning carbon sequestration injections near sole-source aquifers, which was held without a vote.

The Veterans Memorial Display returned to the Illinois State Capitol, honoring veterans from November 11 through November 25 with photos and stories alongside a message wall for visitor notes of gratitude.

Lastly, the Illinois Department of Agriculture launched special Illinois Product Holiday Boxes featuring nine locally crafted items available for purchase online or at their building in Springfield.
