Southern Illinois University’s men’s basketball team began its season with a decisive 83-42 win over McKendree at Banterra Center on Friday night. The Salukis established an early lead, going up by as many as 26 points in the first half and holding a 40-20 advantage at halftime.

"It wasn't perfect … but the effort was good, and that's the most important thing," head coach Scott Nagy said. "I was mostly pleased with the defense. The offense is a bit of a mess … but we still scored 83 points."

Quel'Ron House led Southern Illinois with 18 points and three steals. Rolyns Aligbe contributed 11 points, while Jalen Haynes, Davion Sykes, and Drew Steffe each added eight points. The team used its depth throughout the game.

"Tonight, we were able to get some good minutes for some guys," Nagy said. "The most difficult thing for me right now is the substitution pattern. When games get tighter, there's no way I can play 12 guys."

Southern Illinois’ defense limited McKendree to just 30.8 percent shooting in the first half and maintained pressure throughout the game. The Bearcats finished shooting 28 percent from the field, including only 23 percent from three-point range and converting just 41 percent of their free throws. SIU recorded eight blocks and held McKendree to one made three-pointer in ten attempts during the opening period.

On offense, SIU focused on attacking inside, scoring 44 points in the paint and making frequent trips to the free-throw line—an approach consistent with their exhibition games. When McKendree adjusted defensively, Southern Illinois found open shooters on the perimeter.

"It was a blessing to come out today. The energy was there. The fans were there," senior guard Damien Mayo Jr. said. "It was great to show Saluki Nation what's to come."

The Salukis also capitalized on turnovers, scoring 26 points off McKendree mistakes and using fast breaks effectively for a first-half advantage of 24-8 in paint scoring alone. Their bench contributed significantly with 37 points.

Caleb Burton led McKendree with eight points.

Southern Illinois will play UMKC at home on Friday, Nov. 7 at Banterra Center before starting a five-game road trip that includes stops at Nevada, North Dakota State, two games at the Jacksonville Classic in Florida, and Memphis.
