Illinois Republicans are expressing concern over a new law that alters the structure of the state's Prisoner Review Board (PRB). Senate Bill 19, recently signed by Governor J.B. Pritzker, extends the terms of PRB members from six to eight years. Critics argue this change reduces accountability for gubernatorial appointees and comes at a time when more rigorous oversight is needed.

The PRB's role involves deciding on the release of individuals convicted of serious crimes. Under Governor Pritzker's administration, there has been an increase in approved releases, including cases involving convicted murderers. An incident last year where a parolee released by the board committed murder shortly after his release has fueled Republican concerns about board decisions.

State Senator Terri Bryant criticized SB 19, stating it complicates efforts to keep violent offenders off the streets and limits Senate oversight of PRB members. The legislation is effective immediately.

In other news, Governor Pritzker announced his intention to seek a third term in office. Illinois does not impose term limits on governors, making him the first since the 1980s to pursue three terms. Since taking office in 2019, state spending has increased significantly under his leadership.

As Independence Day approaches, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) and State Fire Marshal’s office urge residents to prioritize fireworks safety. Only licensed professionals may handle display fireworks according to state law. Officials reported 156 injuries and one death related to fireworks during a recent period and recommend attending public displays instead of personal use.

Additionally, with the legislative session adjourned for spring, Illinois Senate Republicans will host various events across districts throughout summer. These gatherings aim to connect constituents with their elected officials through town halls and community visits focused on issues like tax relief and public safety.

Residents are encouraged to participate in these events to engage with local senators and discuss legislative matters important to them.

For more information or emergencies related to fireworks violations, contact IDNR at 217-782-9976 or OSFM at 217-785-0969.
