The Southern Illinois University softball team split their Saturday doubleheader against Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The team's record stands at 26-17 overall and 17-3 in the conference.
In the first game, SIU secured a 12-6 win in extra innings. The Salukis scored nine of their total 12 runs in the eighth inning after Northern Iowa tied the game in the seventh. Southern Illinois had a total of 13 hits and recorded one error. Northern Iowa had 10 hits and did not record any errors.
McKenzie Newcomb, a senior, was credited with the win for SIU. Newcomb pitched five innings, allowing five hits, five earned runs, and struck out four batters. Kiana McDowell started for SIU, giving up five hits and one earned run over three innings.
Emily Williams had a standout performance with a 2-for-2 record, a home run, four RBI, and three walks. Addi Baker contributed with a home run and three RBI. Emma Austin, Jackie Lis, and Amanda Knutson each had two hits.
In the second game, Southern Illinois could not maintain their momentum and lost 8-6. Despite scoring six runs on seven hits, SIU could not overcome Northern Iowa. McDowell took the loss, pitching six innings.
Addi Baker continued her strong batting with a grand slam in the seventh inning. Amanda Knutson also had a notable performance with two hits and two RBI.
Southern Illinois will return to their home field on Wednesday to host UT Martin at 4 p.m. This marks the beginning of their final homestand for the season. They will then face Murray State in another series starting on Friday.
