Southern Illinois University's track and field team delivered a notable performance at the Cougar Classic. The team participated in this event to compensate for the Bill Cornell Spring Classic, which was canceled due to adverse weather conditions. Jumps coach Jacob Brydson remarked on the situation, saying, "We had a quite strong showing for a meet that wasn't the original plan." He explained how they managed to secure a spot at the event hosted by SSIUE, resulting in numerous top-three finishes and a display of depth in various events.
In track events, the men's 4x100 relay team claimed victory, led by Caleb Massiah and anchored by Xavier Preston. Kasha Nielly set a personal best in the 100m hurdle, while Christian Coleman, Andre Jackson II, Trinity Cleaver, and Leah Thames also made significant contributions in their respective events. Shane Ashton and Kelsey Pacha achieved second-place positions in the 400m hurdles, and Brianna Nieset secured third place in the 800m event.
The field events saw Southern Illinois taking the top three positions in the men's long jump, with Darrione Williams finishing in first place. Jacob Morrison and Caleb Massiah completed the top-placing trio. Darius Fuller succeeded in the triple jump event, and Jordan Smith achieved a personal best with second place in the javelin throw. Freshman Na'Kyrah Cooks performed well in the triple jump and long jump, while Jalynn Wood and Grant Spicer also made commendable appearances in the pole vault and high jump, respectively.
Coach Jacob Brydson spoke about the performances in the field events: "One bonus of having three tremendous jumpers is they always have at least two others to jump with." He noted Jordan Smith's potential, stating, "He doesn't compete like a typical freshman, and his feel for the event was showcased today."
The Salukis are preparing for their next competition at the Gibson Invitational in Terre Haute, Indiana, hosted by MVC favorite Indiana State on April 17.
