Southern Illinois finishes second at Missouri Valley Conference swim championships

The 2025 Women's Missouri Valley Conference Swim and Dive Championships concluded in Waukee, Iowa, with Southern Illinois University (SIU) finishing as runner-up with a team score of 1331. The Salukis received numerous post-season honors, including several All-Conference members and two specialty awards.

In the preliminaries, SIU's Celia Pulido led the 200-yard backstroke event, followed by teammates Brooklyn Anderson and Liseska Gallegos Gutierrez. Andrea Santos Arambula secured a spot in the B-finals. Susanna Hernandez finished eighth in the 100-yard freestyle to make it to the A-finals, while Bea Padron and Zaria Terry qualified for the B-finals.

Olivia Herron set a new MVC championship record in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:11.47, securing an A-finals spot. Madalyn Booker and Ali Robertson also advanced to the B-finals. In the 200-yard butterfly, Fernanda Sánchez was SIU's only swimmer to reach the A-finals.

During finals, Pulido won gold in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:54.78. Gallegos took second place and Anderson third in this event. Hernandez placed eighth in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 50.24 seconds.

Herron claimed another victory for SIU by winning gold in the 200-yard breaststroke with a new MVC Championship record time of 2:10.1. Sánchez led all Southern swimmers by placing seventh in the 200-yard butterfly.

In diving events, Farida Moussa finished as conference runner-up on three-meter boards with a score of 299.60 points. The championships concluded with SIU's relay team earning silver in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

At season's end, twelve Salukis received honors; Sanchez, Booker, and Jasmine Rau were named All-Conference Honorable Mentions while nine others made All-MVC First Team: Anderson, Gallegos Gutierrez, Hernandez Herron Moussa Padron Pulido Robertson Terry

Gallegos Gutierrez was awarded MVC Freshman Swimmer of Year after being named Freshman Week three times during season earning three silver medals at this year's championships

Pulido crowned MVC Swimmer Year having been Swimmer Week once but ending dominant performance earning six gold medals breaking numerous records throughout four-day competition
