Southern Illinois University faced a challenging game against Eastern Kentucky at the Gulf Coast Showcase, ending in a 77-72 defeat. The Salukis struggled initially, managing only six field goals in the first half. This allowed Eastern Kentucky to establish a significant lead, reaching 21-4 within seven minutes. The Colonels capitalized on SIU's poor shooting and turnovers, extending their advantage to 48-22 by halftime.
In the second half, Southern Illinois made a strong comeback attempt, outscoring Eastern Kentucky 50-29. Ali Dibba led this effort with 24 of his game-high 26 points scored after halftime. Kennard Davis Jr. contributed significantly with 15 points during this period as well.
Despite reducing the deficit from 27 points to just six with over two minutes left, SIU could not complete the comeback. Eastern Kentucky maintained their lead through key plays in the final moments.
Dibba's performance surpassed his previous career high of 25 points set last December against Western Kentucky. Davis added an impressive all-around performance with 21 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
The Salukis improved their shooting accuracy in the second half to finish at 43.4 percent overall but struggled from beyond the arc at just over 31 percent.
Devonate Blanton was pivotal for Eastern Kentucky with 17 points and six rebounds while Mayar Wol added another crucial contribution including three successful three-pointers.
Southern Illinois will continue their participation in the Gulf Coast Showcase facing Florida Tech next.
