The Southern Illinois University (SIU) women's basketball team is set to play against Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. in Edwardsville, Illinois. The Salukis are coming off a recent defeat, losing 87-54 to North Texas on December 7. In that game, Se'Quoia Allmond scored 15 points while Isabella Palmqvist added 10 points. SIU struggled with turnovers, committing 22 in total, marking the fourth instance this season where they have had at least 20 turnovers in a game.
Currently ranked 11th in the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC), SIU averages 59.6 points per game offensively and allows an average of 69.9 points defensively, placing them seventh in the conference for defense. The team ranks eighth in rebounding within the MVC but holds second place for offensive rebounds.
Under head coach Kelly Bond-White, now in her third season with a record of 25-44, the Salukis have new additions to their coaching staff: Greg Brown as assistant coach and Peyton Thevenot as graduate assistant.
Gift Uchenna leads SIU with an average of 14.9 points and 10.6 rebounds per game and is notable for being the only player in the MVC averaging a double-double this season. She also ranks highly nationally in rebounding and blocks.
Isabella Palmqvist follows Uchenna with an average of 8.3 points per game and has made significant contributions from beyond the arc with a .379 three-point percentage.
SIUE enters Sunday's matchup with a record of 1-7 after losing four consecutive games since their lone win against Roosevelt University on November 19.
Historically, Southern Illinois has a favorable record against SIUE, leading the series with five wins out of eight meetings and having won their last two encounters.
