In 1994, Congress passed Joint Resolution 413 to establish November 1st as Family Literacy Day. This day is observed annually to emphasize the significance of family literacy in developing children's communication skills. It highlights that literacy education extends beyond school and into the home environment. Parents are encouraged to incorporate reading and learning activities into daily routines to enhance their children's literacy abilities and strengthen family bonds.

The Illinois House Republicans have formed the Literacy Improves Future Endeavors (LIFE) working group, which aims to enhance literacy among future generations. The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in learning loss for many students, particularly in literacy. The House Republicans' mission is to restore and improve literacy skills across Illinois, ensuring students are equipped for life challenges. Their statewide plan involves recruiting teachers, improving student outcomes, and empowering parents to collaborate with educators.

State Representative Dave Severin (R-Benton) leads the LIFE working group. With a background involving education through his family and service on the Benton School Board, Severin advocates for parental involvement in children's reading habits. "I miss the days of reading books to my son and my grandsons," Severin shared. "As the head of the Literacy Improves Future Endeavors House Republican working group, I have met with dozens of education and literacy advocates over the last couple of years who expressed to me that we have issues with students falling behind on literacy learning achievement."

Severin notes that one factor contributing to this issue is children choosing video games over reading at home. To address this gap, he initiated a summer reading program offering incentives like a pool party for participating families.

Family Literacy Day serves as a reminder of families' vital role in promoting education through fundamental literacy skills at home. Encouraging families to lead by example can create a strong foundation for children’s learning journey.
