Practicing optometrist and State Representative Paul Jacobs has been recognized as the Illinois Optometric Association's Legislator of the Year. Jacobs, who has served southern Illinois for over 40 years, expressed his gratitude at the association's annual conference in Springfield on October 5, 2024.

Jacobs emphasized the crucial role optometrists play in healthcare by stating, "Optometrists are often the first line of defense against a wide array of health issues, detecting diseases like diabetes and hypertension that can be caught early through routine eye exams." He highlighted personal stories shared with him during his tenure that illustrate the impact of proper vision care.

Reflecting on his journey into public service, Jacobs said, "When I first entered public service, I did so with a deep commitment to improving the lives of the people in our state. I am truly honored to receive this award, and I am committed to continuing to work with the IOA in the future to improve health outcomes for all Illinoisans."

The award was presented at an event held at the Abraham Lincoln Hotel and Conference Center.
