As Memorial Day weekend approaches, marking the unofficial start of the summer boating season, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and Illinois Conservation Police are emphasizing the importance of safety on the water. They urge individuals to wear life jackets at all times and to operate boats only while sober.

In 2023, Illinois waters saw 70 reportable boating accidents, resulting in 12 fatalities and 37 injuries, according to statistics from the Illinois Conservation Police. Of those who died, eight were not wearing life jackets or vests.
