State Senator Terri Bryant (R-Murphysboro) has filed legislation aimed at preventing inappropriate relationships between teachers and students in Illinois. Senate Bill 2823 makes it illegal for any teacher to engage in sexual activity with a high school student, even if the student is 18 or older.

Senator Bryant emphasized the importance of creating a safe and trusting educational environment for students. She stated, "It is our responsibility to protect students from potential harm and abuse of power." She drew attention to the fact that individuals in other professions, such as corrections, face criminal charges for abusing their authority, regardless of the victim's age. Senator Bryant believes the same should apply in the school system.

The proposed legislation, Senate Bill 2823, aims to strengthen existing laws to further protect students from potential abuse. Teachers who violate the law would face severe consequences, including a Class 3 felony for their first offense and a Class 2 felony for subsequent offenses or if multiple victims are involved. Furthermore, individuals who violate the law would be included in both the sexual predator and sex offender databases, ensuring public awareness and ongoing monitoring.

Senator Bryant highlighted that this legislation sends a clear message that any inappropriate relationship between a teacher and student will not be tolerated. She stated, "This legislation is a necessary step to safeguard our students and prevent any form of abuse of power."

Interestingly, the idea for this legislation originated from Senator Bryant's Youth Advisory Council, which comprises high school students from the 58th Senate District. During a meeting with the council, the students proposed the creation of legislation to address inappropriate relationships between teachers and students, regardless of the student's age.

Senator Bryant's legislation aims to protect Illinois students and ensure their safety within the educational system. It demonstrates a commitment to preventing any form of abuse of power and fostering a secure learning environment for all students.
