State Representative Paul Jacobs and State Representative Patrick Windhorst greeted officials from the SIU School of Law during the first week of the 2023 Veto Session at the State Capitol. The occasion marked the 50th anniversary of the law school, and Rep. Jacobs, a chief co-sponsor of HR 297, expressed his pride in supporting the institution.

"We owe them a special congratulations for 50 years of success and positive results, and we wish them the best in the coming 50 years!" said Rep. Jacobs, who represents SIU Carbondale in Springfield.

HR 297, the resolution honoring the SIU School of Law, highlights the school's contributions since its establishment in 1973. It emphasizes the institution's commitment to shaping legal minds, offering various programs for students pursuing their juris doctorate, and providing multicultural and extracurricular activities.

The resolution also recognizes the specializations offered by the SIU School of Law, including business and transactional law, health law, intellectual property, international and comparative law, litigation and dispute resolution, and public interest law. The school's Civil Practice/Elderly Clinic provides legal assistance to senior citizens in Southern Illinois, while also offering support to victims of domestic violence, juveniles in the justice system, and veterans and their families.

Additionally, the SIU School of Law provides internship and externship opportunities, such as judicial and public interest externships, that serve both its students and the public. Over the years, the institution has produced numerous legal professionals who have served the citizens of Illinois and the United States through elected office.

The school fosters a vibrant student community, with over 20 student organizations available for students to join. These organizations cover a wide range of interests, including constitutional law, cultural heritage, intellectual property, immigration law, reproductive justice, and more.

Housed in the Lesar Law Building on the Carbondale campus, the SIU School of Law has gained a strong reputation as an outstanding institution of higher learning. It offers a collaborative and tight-knit community, allowing students to thrive through relationship building, shared experiences, and lasting connections.

In light of the SIU School of Law's 50th anniversary, the Illinois House of Representatives passed a resolution recognizing and celebrating the institution. The resolution extends well wishes to the students, faculty, staff, and administration of the law school, acknowledging their significant contributions to the Southern Illinois region, the state of Illinois, the United States, and the world.

As the SIU School of Law commemorates this milestone, it continues to provide a quality education and prepare future legal professionals who will make a positive impact in the field of law.
