Johnston City Community Unit School District 1 Board of Education met April 20.

Here are the minutes provided by the board:

The Board of Education of the Johnston City Community Unit School District No. 1 met at a regular Board meeting held on April 20, 2023 with Closed Session beginning at 6:34 p.m. and the regular meeting beginning at 7:00 p.m. at the Unit Office, 200 E. 12th Street, Johnston City, IL. President Chris Cullum called the meeting to order and asked the clerk for the attendance roll call.

ROLL CALL

Present: Patti Martin, Greg Smiley, Keven Stroud, and Chris Cullum

Absent: Chad Barras, Jimmy Dean, and Randy McIntosh

Motion made by Jimmy Dean and seconded by Randy McIntosh to approve the consent agenda consisting of the following:

Approval of Regular and Closed Session Minutes of the 3/19/23 Regular Meeting

Approval of Treasurer’s Report

Approval of Bills for Payment

Voting Aye: Martin, Smiley, Stroud, and Cullum

Motion Carried.

The Board recognized the JCHS Scholar Bowl at the meeting for their season accomplishments. The team finished with an overall record of 52–8, most wins in a season in school history, Black Diamond Conference Champs for second consecutive year, undefeated in conference both years, Masonic Tournament Sectional Champions, 3rd Place at Masonic State Tournament, IHSA Regional and IHSA Sectional Champions, 4th Place at the IHSA State Tournament, first state trophy in school scholar bowl history, Chase McReynolds, Adam Ashby, and Ava Anderson all named to the All- Sectional Team, Ava Anderson named 1st Team All-State, back-to-back 1st Team All-State selections for the first time in school history.

Jim Siefert, Hurst-Rosche, submitted construction project updates to the Board. The Unit Office is going well. The Jefferson School Phase 1 rebuild will not begin until the end of May. The Jefferson School Phase 2, asbestos removal, is ready to send out for bids. The Jefferson School Phase 3 and 4for the addition of four (4) classrooms, new library, and the remaining building renovation will be ready to bid in the fall. The insurance work is progressing quickly. The District cost will be approximately $18,000 for the abatement and approximately $6,000 for the removal of everything else in the rooms.

Motion made by Keven Stroud and seconded by Greg Smiley to adopt and approve the second reading of the IASB PRESS Policy Updates as presented.

Motion made by Patti Martin and seconded by Greg Smiley to amend the summer school dates to Monday through Thursday, May 30th through June 29th with no classes on Memorial Day, Monday, May 29th and Juneteenth, Monday, June 19th.

Motion Carried.

Motion made by Keven Stroud and seconded by Patti Martin to approve the Hurst-Rosche work order for Jefferson School.

Voting Aye: Martin, Smiley, Stroud, and Cullum

Motion Carried.

Motion made by Patti Martin and seconded by Keven Stroud to authorize Hurst-Rosche to solicit bids for the Phase 2 Classroom Renovation/Abatement of the North Wing at Jefferson School.

Voting Aye: Martin, Smiley, Stroud, and Cullum

Motion Carried.

The awarding of bids for the Jefferson School Phase 1 Reconstruction was tabled until the May 4, 2023 meeting.

Motion made by Greg Smiley and seconded by Keven Stroud to award the bids of Floorsite in the amount of $62,700 for luxury vinyl tile for the High School Flooring Project and in the amount of $48,725 for the Washington Middle School Flooring Project.

Motion Carried.

Motion made by Chris Cullum and seconded by Keven Stroud to set the June Board meeting date and to set the date for the Amended Budget Hearing on June 29, 2023.

Motion made by Greg Smiley and seconded by Patti Martin to approve the out of state trips for the Middle School Student Council to the Ronald McDonald House in St. Louis, MO on May 5, 2023 and the 8th Grade Class to Atomic City in Paducah, KY on May 17, 2023.

Voting Aye: Martin, Smiley, Stroud, and Cullum

Motion Carried.

Motion made by Keven Stroud and seconded by Patti Martin to approve the Teacher’s Contract.

Motion made by Keven Stroud and seconded by Greg Smiley to approve the following actions regarding personnel: employ Amanda Stanley, Trevor Stanley, Blake Dobraski, Chanda McCoy, Melanie Emery, McKinley Carver, Caitlyn Boyd, Holly Clark, Toni Lawrence, Sarah Smith, Robbie Rosenbery as Summer School Teachers, Rosa Moulton, Anna Clark, Courtney Garner, Kendra Reed as Summer School Aides, Scott Burzynski, Saeward Mattox, Mitchell Rushing as Summer Driver’s Education Teachers, Sarah Smith as a First Grade Teacher, Alexis Ligons as a District K-12 Music Teacher, Jinna Glasco as High School Cheerleading Coach and to approve Emily West and Kailee Grant as Volunteer Assistant High School Cheerleading Coaches.

Voting Aye: Martin, Smiley, Stroud, and Cullum

Motion Carried.

Mrs. Clark informed the Board that the “what if” scenario has happened and there is a bus driver shortage, but Becky has been able to address the situation routes by combining routes.

Mrs. Clark informed the Board that state testing has finished and that benchmark testing will be held the first week in May.

Mrs. Clark updated the Board on upcoming events. The Art Show will be held at the high school on Friday, April 21st from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., the Mike Dean Memorial Blood Drive will be held at the high school on Monday, April 24th from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and Scholarship night at the high school will be on Wednesday, April 26th at 6:30 p.m.

Motion made Randy McIntosh and seconded by Jimmy Dean to adjourn the meeting at 7:30 p.m.
