City of Carbondale Preservation Commission met Jan. 9.

Here are the minutes provided by the commission:

1. Roll Call: Mr. Rhodes called the meeting to order at 5:39 p.m.

Members Present: Ashby, Rhodes, Bittle, Norris-Price and Zurlinden

Members Absent: McCreary, Brown

Staff Present: Gibson

Guests: Benjamin Mendez

2. Approval of Minutes: Mr. Zurlinden moved to and was seconded by Mr. Ashby to approve the minutes of December 12, 2022.

The motion to approve the minutes passed with a unanimous voice vote.

3. Communication and Reports:

a) Educational and Technical Assistance Committee

c) Work Plan Committee

a. No Report

d) Certificate of Appropriateness Committee

a. No Report

e) Founders’ Park Subcommittee

a. No Report

f) Preservation Month Subcommittee

5. New Business

h) Upcoming Event: Regional Preservation Workshop on January 17th, 2023 from 3 pm – 5 pm at the Civic Center, hosted in partnership with the Illinois State Historic Preservation Office – There was a discussion on the Regional Preservation Workshop and what information the workshop will have. There was also a discussion on different historical societies around Sothern Illinois to invite to the workshop. There was a discussion on keeping the commission updated on the demolition permits and what area of town the homes are being demolished.

i) Open Meetings Act Frequently Asked Questions and Review- There was a discussion of the Commission on the Open Meetings Act training for this upcoming year and to have the training completed by the next meeting.

j) By-Laws Review

6. Comments from the Public, Commission Members, or Staff

a. There was a discussion on the endangered list for historical properties and nominating Attucks High School and Walnut St. Baptist Church.

b. Ben Mendez of 511 W. Walnut St. recently purchased the oldest house in Carbondale and discussed the structural improvements for the home. Ms. Gibson stated that the commission will need to issue a Certificate of Appropriateness.

7. Adjournment:

Mr. Zurlinden moved to adjourn, and was seconded by Mr. Bittle, the meeting at 6:29 p.m.
