Village of DeSoto Board of Trustees met Sept. 20.

Here are the minutes provided by the board:

President Douglas Hexamer called the second regular monthly meeting of the DeSoto Village Board of Trustees to order at 7:00 P.M. Village Clerk Paula Parks was present to record the minutes.

               Jennifer Morgan        Cristy Desormeaux

               Eric Schuler

Absent:   Tony Rushing            Brian Gleason            

Motion made by Jennifer Morgan, seconded by Paulette Johnson, to dispense with the reading of the minutes and to approve them. Motion carried.

Motion made by Paulette Johnson, seconded by Eric Schuler, to approve the August revenue report. Motion carried.

Motion made by Jennifer Morgan, seconded by Eric Schuler, to pay the list of bills. Upon roll call vote: Paulette Johnson – Yes; Jennifer Morgan – Yes; Cristy Desormeaux – Yes; Eric Schuler – Yes. Motion carried.

Trustee Eric Schuler reported that the Water Committee recommended hiring Sharon Suchecki as water meter reader.

Motion made by Eric Schuler, seconded by Paulette Johnson, to hire Sharon Suchecki, per the Water Committee’s recommendation, as water meter reader on the east side of town at $.72 per meter, effective October 1, 2021. Upon roll call vote: Paulette Johnson – Yes; Jennifer Morgan – Yes; Cristy Desormeaux – Yes; Eric Schuler – Yes. Motion carried.

Trustee Paulette Johnson reported that the Du Quoin State Bank hopes to open the De Soto banking center before the first of the year. However, if it gets close, they will wait until after the first of the year.

Trustee Johnson noted that October 31, the observance of Halloween, is on Sunday this year. Since Sunday is a church day, she felt it would be appropriate to allow trick-or-treating on October 30 instead of October 31. The Fire Department was agreeable with the idea as were other board members.

Motion made by Paulette Johnson, seconded by Jennifer Morgan, that due to Halloween being on Sunday, to allow trick-or-treating on Saturday, October 30 from 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM. Motion carried.

The annual Halloween party and hayride at the city park will not be held this year due to COVID-19 restrictions. Instead, treats will be passed out to trick-or-treaters at the Seniors Park on Saturday, October 30 from 5:30 PM to 7 PM.

Christmas at the Gazebo will be held at the De Soto Seniors Park on Friday, December 3 at 6:00 PM.

Instead of Milk and Cookies with Santa at the village hall, Santa will greet and treat children at the De Soto Seniors Park on Saturday, December 11 from 1:00 PM until 3:00 PM.

The school crossing will be closed at the four-way intersection during the railroad crossing repairs on August 27, 28 and 29. The school has been notified.

Jennifer Morgan reported that the Boy Scout food drive bags will be put out on Saturday, November 13 and will be picked up on Saturday, November 20 between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM.

President Doug Hexamer announced that the De Soto Lions Club won the Lions Candy Day Award for Highest Collection Percentage per Member for the state of Illinois. Congratulations to the De Soto Lions Club!

The next board meeting will be held Monday, October 4, 2021 at 7:00 PM at the village hall.

Motion made by Paulette Johnson, seconded by Eric Schuler, to adjourn at 7:57 PM. Motion carried.
