CARBONDALE NON-BARGAINING UNIT EMPLOYEES PERSONNEL BOARD: City of Carbondale Plans Modified Memorial Day Service

Cemetery

Carbondale Non-Bargaining Unit Employees Personnel Board recently issued the following announcement.

The City of Carbondale will host a modified Memorial Day Service at Woodlawn Cemetery to honor the men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice defending our nation.

On Monday, May 31, at 10:00 a.m., the City of Carbondale Honor Guard will conduct the flag-raising ceremony followed by a rifle salute. Immediately following, from 10:00 a.m. until noon, there will be a self-guided walking tour through historic Woodlawn Cemetery, marked by brief biographies of some of the notable veterans displayed near their headstones.

Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or come prepared to stand during the flag service.

The difficult decision to forgo the full, traditional service for a second year was made after much consideration to COVID-19 safety, as the traditional service attracts hundreds of guests to the small cemetery. Those who are not comfortable in attending this service are encouraged to join in the observation of the National Moment of Remembrance at 3:00 p.m., with a minute of silent reflection on those who have given their life in service to the nation.
