State Sen. Dale Fowler (R-Harrisburg) called on dozens of high school students from across his district, the 59th Senate District, to encourage them to participate in his annual Youth Advisory Council on March 15 to teach them about political issues.

The youth council event was designed to teach students how to lead in the political sphere and to get the participants more interested in politics and policy issues.

"This is one of my favorite events to host each year, bringing together students to engage with one another and providing a platform for them to get involved and learn more about state government and leadership," Fowler said, the Marion Republican reported in March. "While hosting it virtually makes the event look different, it didn't take away from the passion, interests and enthusiasm our students have for learning about government and how they can become leaders in their communities."

Caden Cockburn, a senior at Johnston City High School, also commented on the effort stating that the Advisory Council will inform students of the concerns that Illinois leadership expresses daily.

"It is important for students to participate in events like Sen. Fowler's Youth Advisory Council so that we cannot only learn from the senator and other local community leaders but also so that they can hear from us …" Cockburn said, the Marion Republican website.

Participants took part in roundtable talks related to political careers and education within the region.

Participants were selected based on recommendations from school administrators.
