The Southern Illinois Community Foundation (SICF) wants current and future nonprofit leaders to participate in its newest NonProfit Network initiative called the Southern Illinois Leadership Institute (SILI).

The institute is an eight-session program scheduled to begin at the end of March.

Sessions happen on the fourth Saturday of each month until October.

Sessions take place at the John A Logan College in Carterville and encompass six hours of training.

The sessions will incorporate several lessons, including assessing strengths, leadership, diversity and inclusion, nonprofit governances, financing, and how to motivate volunteers.

Attendees will be able to interact with other nonprofits, food pantries, businesses, and government agencies to learn from them and foster relationships within the community.

"Through SILI, we have the opportunity to better equip the leaders of our nonprofits, professionals, board members, and volunteers while also assuring diverse voices and strengths are included and empowered," the SICF said in a release about the sessions. "By developing our leaders, we transform not only individuals but whole communities. Encouraging and fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion in nonprofit leadership is a critical piece of this transformation."

The institute is a joint effort between the NonProfit Network, John A Logan College, Delta Regional Authority, Southern Illinois Community Foundation, and the NAACP in Carbondale and Alexander/Pulaski.

Those who want to participate in SILI first have to meet a few requirements.

They must live in one of Illinois' 17 southernmost counties, have a resume, be older than 18, name the nonprofit or public sector committee they're working for and pledge to attend the eight sessions.

Interested participants can apply up until Wednesday, March 10. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, SILI will be limited to just 15 participants. Organizers encourage those interested to apply for the 2022 sessions that are already in the works.
