The new communications building at the Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) campus is one step closer to reality.

The Illinois Capital Development Board (CDB) recently said that it picked RATIO Architects to spearhead the design process.

"This is an important project for the SIU Carbondale campus because the Communications Building, which was constructed in 1964, has had no major renovations or additions since,” Dan Mahony, Southern Illinois University System president, said in a release

The project's cost is estimated at $84.7 million, the release said. Approximately $8.3 million of that was released by the CDB in 2020 to cover the cost of the preliminary design.

“Advances in technology have had a profound impact on the programs which are housed there, including cinema and photography, journalism, and radio, television, and digital media, Mahony said. "This reconstruction will allow for future changes in technology through innovative design and the creation of flexible work areas.”
