The City of Carbondale has landed a $1.2 million state grant for upgrades to Evergreen Park.
The money from the Rebuild Illinois grant program will be used to replace bathrooms, pave roads and parking lots, and add sidewalks to make it more accessible.
“The objective of this program is to stimulate the economy in the wake of the COVID-19 health crisis by quickly getting Illinoisans back to work on public infrastructure projects that are valuable to their communities,” a state spokesperson said.
The Carbondale park improvement project was one 17 projects among 250 applications to receive the grants. Work on the Carbondale project is expected to begin in 90 days, the city said.
“Investments aimed toward building modern infrastructure and fostering stronger and better-connected communities are at the center of our historic $45 billion capital plan,” Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker said.
