The U.S. Department of Transportation awarded a $13.9 million grant to the city of Carbondale for the department's Better Utilizing Investment to Leverage Development (BUILD) program that will go toward the Southern Illinois Multimodal Station (SIMMS) project, a release issued on the city's website said.
The SIMMS project will build a new transportation project downtown and the grant awarded will design and construct the project. The money will also be used to demolish the current Amtrak station.
The new SIMMS will be constructed to help an underserved population in the city, the release issued on the city's website said. It will also provide more efficient transportation opportunities for the central location of Carbondale. The new transportation station will make it possible to get to points up to 120 miles away in a direct way.
When completed, the new station will give users safe access to all modes, platform waiting areas, and sidewalks without forcing them to cross busy streets, parking lots, or tracks; a project information sheet on the city website said.
