The Hands of Hope foundation dished up barbecue meals to health care workers across Southern Illinois as part of its Operation BBQ’D Hope program.
The operation is the brainchild of Hands of Hope executive director Rev. Dr. Troy Benitone and is part of his plan of giving something back to the community during the dark days of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“When warriors go off to war, we often give them a meal of honor when they go, and when they come home we give them a welcome home meal," Benitone told KFVS, adding that first responders are also among the groups to be feted. "Our idea was to have a meal of hope, a meal of honor.”
Heartland Regional Medical Center, Southern Illinois Healthcare Herrin, Southern Illinois Healthcare, and Saint Joseph in Murphysboro were among the locations where the first round of meals were served.
To pull off the events, Benitone has partnered with barbecue restaurants including 17th Street BBP, The Great Boars of Fire, Riley’s Smokehouse, Chuck’s BBQ and Big Blues Que, with the foundation purchasing all the trimmings and the eateries providing their own unique flair.
Benitone bought the product through his foundation Hands of Hope and will bring the barbecue and sides to these local restaurants so they can put their own flare on the barbecue.
Those looking to donate can visit hohfoundaion.org or text 618-663-4636. All proceeds go to a second round of meals.
