Illinois State Police announced emergency rules to extend FOID and CCL due to expire days after Bryant called for extensions.

A state representative called on Gov. J.B. Pritzker to extend the deadline for firearm owner identification cards and concealed carry licenses as the COVID-19 pandemic continues and the Illinois State Police days later announced emergency rules extending those deadlines.

Rep. Terri Bryant, R-Murphysboro, wrote the governor a letter on Apr. 6 asking him to enact a 90-day window for FOID and CCL.

“The extension of these dates is critical during the COVID-19 crisis, as law-abiding gun owners face the uncertainty that comes with holding an expired card,” Bryant said in the correspondence.

The lawmaker reminded Pritzker of “a massive backlog that forced law-abiding gun owners to wait extended periods of time before receiving their renewed license” before the outbreak.

“I joined several of my fellow House Republican colleagues in the first months of the 2020 Session in calling for changes to the FOID application process,” she wrote. “The delays were already inexcusable, and I fear this crisis may exacerbate an already taxed and broken renewal system.”

Illinois State Police announced emergency rules three days later, on April 9, according to WSILTV. Those rules apply to anyone with a FOID or CCL that are due to expire. The licenses will remain in effect for the duration of the state's disaster declaration and for a period of 12 months afterward.
