Marion Veterans Affairs Medical Center recently issued the following announcement.

Today’s #VeteranOfTheDay is Army Veteran Max Michael Seidemann, who fought at the Battles of Inchon and Wonju during the Korean War.

Max Michael Seidemann was born in Germany but fled to the United States at the age of 12 during the Nazi regime. While attending graduate school in New York, the Army drafted Seidemann deployed him to Korea with the IX Corps. The IX Corps took charge of the western flank of the Pusan perimeter, defending the Naktong River area against attacking North Korean People’s Army (KPA) units. On Sept. 15, 1950, the IX and X Corps forced the KPA northward past Seoul during the Battle of Inchon. They forced the KPA across the 38th parallel on Oct. 1. Seidemann’s unit also fought at the Battle of the Ch’ongch’on River Nov. 25, 1950, and the Third Battle of Wonju Feb. 13, 1951.

Following an honorable discharge, Seidemann settled in Columbus, Ohio, and became a youth director with Congregation Agudas Achim. He later accepted a job with Franklin County. He concluded his professional career working for the state of Ohio as the state director of refugee resettlement. On weekends, Seidemann conducted religious services in a local nursing home for 30 years. He was also active in numerous community and faith-based organizations, volunteering at schools, synagogues and hospitals.

Seidemann passed away in May 2012 at the age 90.
