CARBONDALE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE: Enterprise Zone Approved by State Board

Meeting240

Carbondale Chamber of Commerce recently issued the following announcement.

The Illinois Enterprise Zone Board has officially approved the renewal of the Carbondale/Murphysboro/Jackson County Enterprise Zone, which will go into effect January 1, 2020.

This new Zone replaces the expiring Jackson County Enterprise Zone. Enterprise zones encourage job growth and investment in potentially depressed areas. Companies within each zone may qualify for various tax incentives including sales tax exemptions on the purchase of building materials, an investment tax credit and in some cases, utility taxes. A local official administers each zone with rules set by the State.

Carbondale is one of 14 applicants approved by the Illinois Enterprise Zone Board.

“Since it was first implemented in 1989, the Jackson County Enterprise Zone has been an incentive that has made a real difference in the county. It has been responsible in not only bringing new jobs to the region, but also in aiding the startup and expansion of countless small businesses. This new Enterprise Zone would not have been possible without the leadership from the Enterprise Zone Board, whose members include Carbondale Mayor John "Mike" Henry, Murphysboro Mayor Will Stephens and Jackson County Board Chair Keith Larkin. It’s also important to recognize the hard work of Cary Minnis with the Greater Egypt Regional Planning Commission, who led the application process,” said Steven Mitchell, the Administrator for the newly created Zone.

There are 97 enterprise zones throughout the state. Once designated, an area may remain an Enterprise Zone for 15 years, with a review by the Illinois Enterprise Zone after 13 years for a possible 10-year extension of the zone designation.

It’s a cultural town, yet free of pretense, embracing the great outdoors as readily as urban sophistication. Here, we are open to new ideas, experiences and cultures, so you are encouraged to both express yourself and be yourself, in all ways. That’s Carbondale…All Ways Open… for family, fun, business, new ideas and a bright tomorrow.”
