Carbondale Chamber of Commerce recently issued the following announcement.
The City of Carbondale is currently completing plans for the reconstruction of the Chautauqua Street and McLafferty Road intersection.
This project consists of the following improvements:
Replacement of the existing 4-leg 2-way stop intersection with a 3-leg roundabout
Dedicated bicycle “bypass” lanes in each direction
Reduced cut-thru traffic on Briarwood Drive
Enhanced pedestrian access and crossings
The alignment of the proposed work will be confined to existing City Rights-of-Way, except for the southwest and southeast corners of the project area, which will require easements from Southern Illinois University.
Construction on the project is scheduled to begin in late summer of 2020.
There will be an informational meeting on August 21 from 4:30-6 p.m. in Room 103 of the Carbondale Civic Center, located at 200 S. Illinois Avenue, to discuss the proposed design.
