MARION EYE CENTER: Opthamologist or Optometrist?

Eye 760x475

Marion Eye Center recently issued the following announcement.

There are so many types of physicians and specialists that it can be hard to know exactly who will be the most helpful for you and the specific situation you’re in. Keep reading to learn more about the differences between ophthalmologists and optometrists.

Optometrists

An optometrist is an eye doctor who is trained to examine your eyes for both vision and health problems. They can prescribe eyeglasses and contact lenses to correct your vision issues. Some optometrists can also provide low vision care and even vision therapy.

Optometrists are also licensed to prescribe medications to treat certain eye problems and diseases. Depending on the state you live in, they may be allowed to do more. Though many are not trained to perform surgery, some may be able to do just that. If they don’t provide surgery, they are often there as resourced to support your pre- and post-operative care.

Ophthalmologists

Similar to optometrists, opthamologists also can examine eyes for health and vision issues, and are able to prescribe glasses and contact lenses. Generally, they are able to perform surgery as well. So, ophthalmologists are trained to perform eye exams, diagnose and treat eye disease, prescribe medications, and also perform eye surgery.

WhoshouldIsee?

Generally, it’s up to you who to see for your yearly vision and health check-ups. If you need specialized medical treatment, or even surgery, then you will want to find a physician who is trained and qualified to give you what you need in that area of expertise. You may feel more comfortable finding an Opthamologist or an eye surgeon who is specially trained in the eye issue you have.

If your concerns revolve around getting your glasses or contact lense prescription updated, then it’s truly a matter of preference. Finding a physician who you trust is very important, and the first thing to consider.
