Eye Care | Marion, ILAdjusting your exercise, managing sugar intake, and eating right are important when it comes to managing your diabetes. But, if you have recently been diagnosed with diabetes, you may still be learning about all the ways it impacts your life. For example, did you know that your diabetes can impact how your eye health is? Keep reading to learn how to keep your eyes healthy when you have diabetes.
DailyEyeChecks
Just once a day, we suggest that you do a quick check to make sure your eyes are functioning as they should. This little test will just take a few seconds every day, so it can be easily worked into your routine as you’re brushing your teeth in the morning, or whenever works best for you. Cover each eye for a few seconds, and make sure the uncovered eye is still focusing normally.
DiabeticMacularEdema
One of the most important issues to watch out for when you have diabetes is diabetic macular edema. This is a serious issue that can impact your vision. If you have diabetic macular edema, the macula (which is the center part of the retina) thickens as a result of leaking in your eyes’ retinal vascular structures. We can help you identify what’s going on, which is why we recommend that you see your eye doctor every year.
Cataracts
Chances of developing vision-impacting cataracts go up when you have diabetes. Yes, cataracts are more common in patients with diabetes than those who don’t have it. If you find that you’re having a harder time seeing while you are driving or reading, it could be cataracts. We can help you confirm this issue and provide information on what to do next.
Regardless of your health issues, everyone should see an eye doctor every year. Call us at (800) 344-7058 for a consultation at our Illinois office or (877) 269-4545 for our Missouri location to learn more about what we can do for you.
