FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CARBONDALE – An emergency warming center will open its doors in Carbondale next week.
In December, representatives from the Carbondale Interfaith Council, Carbondale Public Library, Good Samaritan House, Southern Illinois Coalition for the Homeless, Jackson County Health Department, Centerstone, Sparrow Coalition, and the City of Carbondale announced plans to open a temporary emergency warming center. The proposed location was on East Main Street. After further research, the location of the warming center has been changed to 705 E. College Street.
The center will operate from 8 p.m.-8 a.m. through April 1. The center will provide warm sleeping space for people who are homeless in Carbondale, rather than offering region-wide service.
A project coordinator has been hired. The center will be professionally staffed by paid employees as well as unpaid volunteers. All volunteers and employees are being trained in de-escalation and bloodborne pathogen prevention. Staff and volunteers are offered a free hepatitis A vaccination. The center will have security 24/7. Potential volunteers may reach out to the Southern Illinois Coalition for the Homeless.
The warming center is expected to open sometime next week. People needing a warm place to stay in the meantime should contact the Good Samaritan House at (618) 457-5794.
