CARBONDALE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE: ‘Rosemary’s Baby’ opens special October screenings at The Varsity

Carbondale Chamber of Commerce recently issued the following announcement.

Fifty years ago, “Rosemary’s Baby” was lauded by audiences and critics, and it remains an all-time great horror film. That’s why The Varsity has chosen to screen the frightening flick to open a month of special movies.

Based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Ira Levin, “Rosemary’s Baby” was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry for being historically and culturally significant. Today, the film is widely regarded as a classic, described by Rotten Tomatoes as “a frightening tale of satanism and pregnancy that is even more disturbing than it sounds, thanks to convincing and committed performances by Mia Farrow and Ruth Gordon.”

The film, directed by Roman Polanski in his first American film, centers on a young Catholic housewife, Rosemary Woodhouse (Farrow) and her struggling actor husband (Guy, portrayed by John Cassavetes). The couple moves into a New York City building full of scary stories of terrible events. They are befriended by a seemingly innocent and eccentric elderly couple (Ruth Gordon and Sidney Blackmer). Rosemary unexpectedly gets pregnant – after a drug-induced nightmare of being raped by a beast – and begins to suspect that an evil cult wants to take her baby. Rosemary is quickly plunged into a shroud of suspicion and mental agony.

Not unexpectedly, “Rosemary’s Baby” is rated R for adult situations, language and violence.

The Varsity will show “Rosemary’s Baby” at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5. Tickets are $7 or $5 for students. They are available in advance at www.thevarsitycenter.eventbrite.com and will be available at the venue when doors and the bar open at 6:30 p.m. The Varsity Bar features beer, wine, select cocktails, non-alcoholic beverages, snacks and popcorn.

The Varsity is downtown Carbondale at 418 S. Illinois Ave. Keep up with upcoming events at www.facebook.com/varsitycenter.
