CARBONDALE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE: Vote for Pedro! ''Napoleon Dynamite'' at The Varsity on Sept. 7

Carbondale Chamber of Commerce recently issued the following announcement.

High school geekdom has never been funnier in the cult classic “Napoleon Dynamite,” and The Varsity is celebrating all of it on Friday, Sept. 7.

In addition to screening the movie, patrons will be able to get their “Glamour Shots by Deb,” see the bike Pedro actually rode in the movie, and check out a related art exhibit by VHS Girl Katie Winchester. John Deas of Carbondale, who owns the actual “Sledgehammer” is loaning it to The Varsity for the evening. Patrons are also encouraged to come dressed up as their favorite character from the movie.

The movie is set in small-town Preston, Idaho, where awkward teen Napoleon Dynamite (Jon Heder) has trouble fitting in. After his grandmother injures her coccyx in a motorcycle accident, his life is made even worse when uncle Rico (Jon Gries) – who lives in his van and can’t stop talking about his high school football days – shows up to keep an eye on him. But, things are looking up. Napoleon’s dance skills are improving after lots of practice and he and his new friend Pedro (Efren Ramirez) launch Pedro’s campaign for class president. Dang!

The Varsity will show “Napoleon Dynamite” at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept 7. Tickets are $7 or $5 for students and are available in advance at www.thevarsitycenter.org. Tickets also will be available at the venue on the night of the show when doors and the bar open at 6:30 p.m. The Varsity Bar features beer, wine, select cocktails, non-alcoholic beverages, snacks and popcorn.

“Napoleon Dynamite” is rated PG-13. Watch the Trailer: https://youtu.be/N-15hTA8O7c

The Varsity is downtown Carbondale at 418 S. Illinois Ave. Keep up with upcoming events at www.facebook.com/varsitycenter.
