Carbondale Chamber of Commerce recently issued the following announcement.
The Varsity announces its Thursday night Art House Film Series featuring a collection of innovative and international art house films. The series features films from the last 20 years that won prizes at international film festivals. After the films, audiences are invited to stick around and discuss the film.
The series is hosted by Sam Smucker, a graduate student in the College of Mass Communications, who previously worked in film distribution at Strand Releasing in Los Angeles. “I’ve selected a group of films which I think are challenging, beautiful, or just hilarious. I’m so glad the Varsity is providing this opportunity for these films to be shown on a big screen in Carbondale,” Smucker said.
Highlights of the series include Kelly Riechart’s “Meek’s Cutoff” about a group of pioneers and their guide lost on the Oregon trail starring Michelle Williams and Paul Dano, and the absurdly hilarious Argentine film “Wild Tales” which grabs you from the first scene and never lets go. Other films are from Brazil, France, Columbia, China, Thailand and the U.S.
“We want to expand the type of films we are showing to serve all parts of the Carbondale community. We have persistently heard that people wanted to see more international films on the big screen,” said Billy Robbins, President of The Varsity Board of Directors.
The series begins on Thursday, Aug. 16 with “Sita Sings the Blues,” the creation of Nina Paley, a San Francisco-based animator who grew up in Urbana, Illinoi,s and tells the story of the break-up of her marriage by way of the epic Indian tale of Ramayana set to the 1920s jazz vocals of Annette Hanshaw.
The series closes on Nov. 29 with the extraordinarily beautiful martial arts film “House of Flying Daggers.”
The Varsity is a multipurpose facility featuring cinema, live theater, musical acts and a gallery space. The Varsity Bar is open for every show, and audiences can enjoy their drinks and snacks while they watch the film.
All films are on Friday and start at 7 p.m. Doors and the bar open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased on Eventbrite through The Varsity website atwww.thevarsitycenter.org. Early purchase of tickets is encouraged as films often sell out. Tickets are $7 for general admission and $5 for students
