Southern Illinois University's baseball team secured a series sweep over Belmont University on Friday at Itchy Jones Stadium. The Salukis triumphed in both games of the doubleheader, winning the first 4-3 and shutting out Belmont 8-0 in the second game.
In the first game, Southern Illinois relied on Jordan Bach's pivotal performance. Bach hit a three-run home run to help edge Belmont 4-3. Pitcher Alec Nigut maintained the lead, completing five innings while allowing only one earned run and striking out four. Belmont responded with three runs in the third inning, two of which were unearned due to an error by Southern Illinois. The Saluki bullpen took control, with Jackson Payne and Sam Frizzi ensuring their victory. Belmont outhit SIU 12-6, but the Salukis capitalized on key scoring opportunities.
The second game saw Southern Illinois dominate 8-0, with Meade Johnson pitching eight scoreless innings and scattering five hits. Johnson was complemented by a strong offensive performance as the Salukis hit four home runs. Gabe Petrucelli, John Lemm, Mason Schwalbach, and Cecil Lofton contributed to the home run tally. Belmont starter Jake Timbes allowed six runs over 3.2 innings as the team struggled offensively.
Southern Illinois is scheduled to play against Southeast Missouri on Tuesday. The game will mark the season finale for the Salukis at Capaha Field.
