Murphysboro FD responds to 56 fires in 2017

Murphysboro Fire Department responded to 107 calls in 2017 - 1.9 percent more than the previous year, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System.

The calls in Murphysboro included 56 fires - 30 structure fires, seven vehicle fires and 19 other fires. The fire department also responded to one call for ruptures, explosions or overheating.

In all, the department saw $144,575 in fire loss - or about $2,582 per fire.

The department also received 50 false calls, including one malicious call and 49 other false calls.

The calls resulted in one civilian fire-related injury. Additionally, one fire service member was injured in fire-related incidents.

The Murphysboro Fire Department had an annual budget of $162,250 in 2017.

The Murphysboro Firefighters Pension Fund, which has 11 active employees and 12 retired or inactive employees, was $357,014 in debt as of April 2016, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $8,708 for every fire in 2016.
