Makanda TWP VFD responds to 21 fires in 2017

Makanda Township Volunteer Fire Department responded to 34 calls in 2017 - 385.7 percent more than the previous year, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System.

The calls in Makanda included 21 fires - 10 structure fires, two vehicle fires and nine other fires. The fire department also responded to one call for ruptures, explosions or overheating.

In all, the department saw $58,000 in fire loss - or about $2,762 per fire.

The department also received 12 false calls, including eight malicious calls and four other false calls.
