Bill to separate SIU campuses sent to House committee

A bill that would formally rename Southern Illinois University has been referred to a House Rules Committee for further consideration.

House Bill 5861 stipulates that the part of Southern Illinois University associated with the Carbondale campus now be formally known as Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and that the Edwardsville campus be known as Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.

In both instances, the only departments on the campus not affected by the name change would be the School of Medicine, School of Dental Medicine, School of Pharmacy, School of Nursing, and the East St. Louis Center and School of Law.

Sponsored by Rep. Jay Hoffman (D-Swansea), the bill would also officially abolish the board of trustees of SIU, and places each school under the governance of the board of trustees of that university.

Hoffman represents the 113th House district, which includes Granite City, Fairview Heights, Swansea and Belleview.

The bill is co-sponsored by Rep. Katie Stuart (D-Edwardsville), Monica Bristow (D-Godfrey) and LaToya Greenwood (D-East St. Louis).
