Bill to reform SIU board sent to House Rules Committee

Fromshutterstocksiu1280x640

A bill that would reconstitute the Southern Illinois University Management Act has been referred to a House Rules Committee for further consideration.

House Bill 5860 “provides that on the effective date of the amendatory Act, the terms of office of the members of the Board of Trustees of Southern Illinois University shall terminate and the Board shall be reconstituted.”

Among other things, the bill also stipulates that the seven-member board shall be composed of three undergraduate or graduate degree holders from the SIU Edwardsville campus, three from SIU Carbondale and one must not have attended SIU at all.

Sponsored by Rep. Monica Bristow (D-Godfrey), the bill would also change the voting student member to an additional nonvoting student member, along with stripping away provisions that now call for the designation of a voting student member and a nonvoting student member.

Bristow represents House District 111, which includes Madison and Jersey counties.

The bill is co-sponsored by Reps. Katie Stuart (D-Edwardsville), Jay Hoffman (D-Swansea) and Latoya Greenwood (D-East St. Louis).
