The John A. Logan College men's basketball team was ranked No. 12 among junior-college squads in The Sporting News preseason poll, the school's website recently announced.
It's not an unfamiliar position for the Volunteers, who were ranked No. 14 in last year's preseason poll.
Individually, Volunteers sophomore forward Michael Tucker was named by The Sporting News as a preseason first-team All-America. Last season, Tucker averaged 13.6 points and 7.3 rebounds per contest.
The Volunteers are coming off a 24-8 record in the 2015-16 season, which saw the team go as high as number five in the rankings. John A. Logan reached the semifinals of the District 16 tournament before losing 78-73 to Vincennes University.
John A. Logan will open the 2016-17 season by hosting the Kentucky Wesleyan junior varsity at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1. The Volunteers are entering their fifth season under head coach Kyle Smithpeters, who has an 89-38 record at the school.
