November 10, 2025, marks the 250th anniversary of the United States Marine Corps. The date commemorates the establishment of the Continental Marines by a resolution from the Second Continental Congress on November 10, 1775, in Philadelphia. Since its inception, the Marine Corps has played a central role in American military history and has become recognized as one of the world's most capable fighting forces.
Throughout their history, Marines have been noted for their adaptability and effectiveness in various conflicts. Originally formed to support naval operations during the Revolutionary War, they evolved into an independent force known for rapid deployment and specialized combat skills. In World War I, Marines earned respect for their actions at Belleau Wood in France. During this battle, Captain Lloyd Williams responded to advice from a French colonel to retreat with his now-famous words: “Retreat, hell! We just got here!”
The Marine Corps was also prominent in World War II’s Pacific Theater at locations such as Guadalcanal, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. The image of Marines raising the flag on Iwo Jima remains an enduring symbol represented at Arlington National Cemetery’s Marine Corps Memorial.
Today’s Marine Corps continues to adapt to new roles. They conduct both combat and humanitarian missions around the world and provide security for more than 180 U.S. embassies. Additionally, they participate in efforts against drug trafficking domestically and internationally.
Illinois State Representative Brandun Schweizer (R-Danville) served as a Master Sergeant in the Marine Corps for 21 years before retiring. His experience has influenced his legislative work supporting veterans’ issues within Illinois.
Among Rep. Schweizer's legislative initiatives is HB 2572—a bill that gives rulemaking authority to determine eligibility for veteran-related grants and scholarships under state law. Previously, while programs could be administered by the Illinois Department of Veteran Affairs, no rules could be made regarding their operation.
Other bills sponsored by Rep. Schweizer include SB 1160—which allows former members of United Nations Protecting Force missions to apply for special license plates—and SB 2175 which broadens time off provisions for veterans’ medical appointments beyond only hospital or clinic visits related to service-connected disabilities.
Additionally, HB 1882 re-establishes what is now called the Veterans’ Services Task Force—requiring it to meet at least twice yearly and report on issues related to veterans' service-related ailments not yet recognized by federal authorities.
“The safety and freedom we all so deeply cherish were paid for through tremendous sacrifices made by members of our armed forces,” said Rep. Schweizer. “Legislating on behalf of veterans is the least we can do for those who risked their lives to defend our country.”
On this anniversary of its founding, Americans are reminded of both historical achievements and ongoing contributions made by Marines worldwide.
Severin was elected as a Republican representative in Illinois’ 116th House District in 2023 after David Friess.
