Southern Illinois University golfer Anthony De Schutter has made a strong start to the season, winning three individual tournaments and establishing himself as one of the leading players in the Missouri Valley Conference. The fifth-year senior from Belgium is being recognized for his performance, which includes a 71.9 scoring average over 33 rounds and eight rounds in the 60s, with a low round of 65.
Head coach Justin Fetcho noted De Schutter’s progress since last year. "Last year he was still trying to figure out who he was as a golfer," Fetcho said. "Now he has confidence that he can compete and win, and it's shown early and often."
De Schutter’s most recent victory came at the Purdue Fall Invitational, where he finished six under par to secure his third title this season. Only one other Saluki golfer has achieved three tournament wins in a single season.
Reflecting on his improvement, De Schutter said: "Getting a full season under my belt gave me a lot of confidence. It's not just about the swing anymore. It's about how I think and prepare for each shot." He transferred to SIU after attending junior college and Arkansas State.
Fetcho emphasized De Schutter's composure during competition: "He has a calm and collected mindset when he's around the lead," Fetcho said. "He's been able to close out tournaments in a way that shows how much he's grown."
Last season, De Schutter received Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Year honors and was named All-Conference. This year, he is on track to break school records for lowest scoring average both in a single season and potentially over his career.
Fetcho attributed De Schutter's achievements to dedication: "He's worked really hard to get where he is," Fetcho said. "He's bought into what we do here and it's paid off."
With the fall schedule nearing its end, De Schutter and the Salukis are preparing for spring competitions, including the conference championship.
Both coach Fetcho and De Schutter expect continued success for SIU golf as they look ahead.
