Two years after the October 7, 2023, attack by Hamas militants in Israel, Illinois State Representative Dave Severin has issued a statement honoring the victims. On that day, Hamas launched a surprise assault, resulting in the deaths of around 1,200 people, including over 800 civilians and more than 40 Americans. The attack saw entire families killed in their homes and more than 250 individuals taken hostage, among them 10 Americans. At least 22 Israeli villages, towns, and military outposts were targeted.
The violence led to a significant military response from Israel in Gaza. Since then, ongoing conflict has resulted in the deaths of more than 60,000 Palestinians and nearly 2,000 Israelis. Hamas leaders have described the initial attack as a reaction to longstanding issues between Israel and Palestinians, including fatalities and blockades affecting the Gaza Strip.
According to recent reports, Hamas is still holding 48 hostages. Of those, 20 are believed to be alive and two are U.S. citizens. Negotiations for their release and cease-fire talks have stalled. The Israeli government continues to demand the return of all hostages, disarmament of Hamas, and restoration of full control over Gaza before ending military operations.
The situation in Gaza remains severe for civilians. More than 2.1 million people face extreme hunger and starvation as supplies dwindle due to continued fighting and damaged infrastructure. Over 150,000 individuals have been injured since October 2023, while field hospitals struggle with repeated mass casualty incidents and aid efforts remain hampered.
President Trump recently introduced a proposed peace plan aimed at ending the conflict through economic assistance and humanitarian support for rebuilding Gaza along with steps toward long-term regional stability.
Severin was elected as a Republican representative for Illinois’s 116th House District in 2023 after David Friess left office.
