Saluki baseball hosts SIUE for final regular-season home game

Southern Illinois University Carbondale's baseball team is set to host Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in their final regular season home game on Tuesday, May 13, at Itchy Jones Stadium. The first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Southern Illinois enters the game with a record of 35-16 overall and 15-9 in Missouri Valley Conference play after winning two out of three games against Evansville last weekend. The Salukis have shown strong performance when scoring seven or more runs, holding a record of 27-5 under such circumstances. Additionally, they are undefeated this season when leading after six innings.

The visiting team, SIUE, comes into the matchup with a 24-25 overall record and a 16-8 standing in Ohio Valley Conference play. They recently lost two out of three games against Eastern Illinois. SIUE's offensive lineup is led by Daniel Gierer with a .331 batting average and Mack Mitchell who has hit 17 home runs this season.

In their previous encounter on May 6, Southern Illinois won against SIUE with a score of 5-1. Historically, Southern leads the all-time series against SIUE with a record of 33-9 and has been dominant at home with a record of 21-2.

The Salukis currently sit in third place within the MVC standings and have been performing well offensively throughout the season. They rank first in the MVC for runs scored and second for slugging percentage. On defense, they hold an ERA that ranks second-best in their conference.

Individually, Tim Simay leads Southern Illinois with a .343 batting average while Matt Schark has made significant contributions by setting school records for home runs in a single season.

Lance Rhodes continues his leadership as head coach into his sixth year at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Under his guidance, the team achieved back-to-back seasons with over forty wins for the first time in program history during 2021 and 2022.
