State Senator Terri Bryant | Illinois General Assembly
Republican Senators in Illinois have expressed concern over a proposed $6 billion tax increase by Governor JB Pritzker's Democratic allies, warning it could severely impact the state's small business community. This proposal follows a $1 billion tax hike earlier this year to support increased state spending. State Senator Terri Bryant highlighted that such measures could harm working families and businesses already operating under tight margins.
The Republicans also criticized Governor Pritzker for reinstating the franchise tax after previously agreeing to phase it out in 2019, arguing this undermines trust in state leadership. As budget negotiations for Fiscal Year 2026 proceed, Senate Republicans urge Democratic lawmakers to reject what they describe as a "tax-and-spend agenda" and instead aim for a balanced budget.
In another issue, Senate Republicans are opposing efforts by Democrats to lower the estate tax exemption from $4 million to $2 million. They argue this would place additional financial burdens on family-owned farms and businesses. Senator Terri Bryant emphasized the need for reforms to protect these enterprises and maintain Illinois' agricultural legacy.
Additionally, legislation introduced by Illinois Democrats aims to ban certain handguns, particularly Glocks modified with auto-switch devices. While proponents claim it addresses criminal misuse of these devices, which are already illegal under existing laws, Senate Republicans argue it unfairly targets law-abiding gun owners rather than criminals.
Finally, National Women's Health Week is being observed from May 11-17 this year. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is focusing on menopause awareness, mental health resources, and cancer prevention during this period dedicated to women's health issues.
