SIH recently celebrated its volunteers at the annual Systemwide Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon held on April 23 at Giant City Lodge. More than 100 volunteers and auxilians from various SIH facilities, including SIH Memorial Hospital of Carbondale, the SIH Cancer Institute, and others, gathered to honor their commitment to service.

The event highlighted the extensive contributions made by these volunteers. "Each of you makes a difference — and together, you make a profound impact on thousands of our neighbors across Southern Illinois," said John Antes, SIH President and CEO. Volunteers support both daily operations and long-term goals at SIH facilities, contributing thousands of service hours annually.

Rodney Smith, vice president and administrator of SIH Herrin Hospital and SIH Harrisburg Medical Center, remarked on the importance of volunteers' presence: "You’re the first smile many of our patients and staff see." Jeff Stewart, director of mission integration, added that while volunteers may not provide direct medical care, their comfort is equally healing.

Liz Issler, president of the SIH Herrin Hospital Auxiliary, emphasized the value of relationships formed through volunteering. Paula Frisch, manager of volunteer services at SIH, noted that all facilities are seeking new volunteers. Woody Thorne, chief development officer, stressed the essential role volunteers play in supporting patient care and strengthening healthcare systems like SIH.
