After an early lead with three runs, Southern Illinois fell to Murray State in the series opener with a score of 8-3. Despite their strong start, the Salukis struggled offensively, managing only three hits beyond the initial innings. Southern Illinois now holds a record of 31-14 overall and 12-7 within the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC).
Jordan Bach contributed significantly to the early momentum, hitting his eighth home run on the fourth pitch of the game and reaching base on four occasions out of five at-bats. Additional runs were added by the Salukis in the second inning when Matt Schark delivered a run through a sacrifice fly and Gabe Petrucelli hit an RBI single.
However, the Racers responded swiftly, overtaking the Salukis with runs in the second and third innings. Southern Illinois pitcher Alec Nigut, who started the game, was replaced after two innings, having conceded four earned runs in his 11th start of the season.
Murray State's starting pitcher, Nic Schutte, performed effectively after the initial innings, allowing just two baserunners over the next four innings. Dylan Petrey provided a lengthy stint for Southern Illinois, pitching 4.2 innings and giving up two earned runs.
The Racers extended their advantage steadily throughout the game, ending with a five-run lead that proved insurmountable for the Salukis. Dylan Zentko and Graham Kelham closed the game for Murray State, stopping any further advances by Southern Illinois.
The series will continue on Saturday with the first pitch planned for 2 p.m.
