Southern Illinois University has appointed Eriq Moore as the new cornerbacks coach for their football team, according to an announcement made by head coach Nick Hill. Moore joins Southern Illinois from his previous position at Missouri Western State, where he coached defensive backs and contributed to the Griffins' playoff appearance in 2023.
"Eriq has worked his way up through the coaching ranks, starting out as a GA at Chadron State," Hill stated. "The path he's taken, it tests you and your love for the game. Everywhere he's been, he's helped elevate their program."
Moore's background as a player includes a tenure at SEMO, where he was a three-year starter from 2013 to 2016. He began as a walk-on, later earning a scholarship and becoming team captain in his junior and senior years.
Hill remarked on Moore's personality and energy, saying, "He has an infection personality. He brings a lot of energy, and the guys in the corners room are really going to enjoy playing for him."
Before his time at Missouri Western, Moore served at Emporia State for two seasons (2021-22), achieving a 15-6 record and making two post-season appearances. His players, Montrell Wilson and Derrick Maxwell, were notable for tying for the conference lead in 2022 with three interceptions each.
Moore's coaching experience also includes roles as defensive backs coach at Southern Arkansas (2019-20) and as a graduate assistant at Chadron State (2018). Moore, together with his wife Unique, has two sons, EJ and Elijah.
