Members of the Illinois Senate Republican Caucus have sent a letter to U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi seeking federal guidance on maintaining fairness in high school women's sports within Illinois. The letter comes amid conflicting directives from state agencies and increasing concerns about the implementation of Title IX following recent federal actions.

The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) had responded to inquiries from Republican lawmakers regarding protections for female athletes. The IHSA noted that the Illinois Attorney General and the Department of Human Rights have advised allowing athletes to compete based on gender identity, which may conflict with federal law.

Senate Republicans emphasize that the issue is non-partisan and focuses on preserving the progress achieved for women in sports and ensuring fair competition.

The Republican senators' letter to Attorney General Bondi requests clarification on several points related to President Trump's February 5 Executive Order, "Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports," which directs federal agencies to interpret Title IX to protect single-sex athletic competition. The queries include whether Illinois' current policy violates federal law, the potential risk to federal education funding, and steps needed to align with the Executive Order and Title IX.

Recently, the Illinois Senate unanimously passed legislation aimed at easing regulations for people with disabilities. Senate Bill 1256, passed on April 9, 2025, requires certification for disability plates or parking decals to be updated every five years and permits physical therapists to sign off on applications.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson plans to visit Springfield again, advocating for increased state funding for Chicago. Despite facing criticism from Republican lawmakers, Johnson is set to meet with Governor Pritzker and other state leaders to request support for the city’s public schools and transit systems. Republicans claim the mayor's efforts distract from addressing Chicago's financial issues.

State Senator Terri Bryant has announced that nearly $10,000 in state-sponsored library grants have been awarded to schools throughout her district. The grants, administered by the Illinois Secretary of State’s office, aim to support school libraries by providing necessary resources and technology.

With Illinois Senators returning to Springfield after a break, they face the task of reviewing legislation passed by the House. The session, set to continue through May, will focus on passing the state’s next fiscal budget. Governor Pritzker's proposal for the largest budget in state history, amid a deficit, has prompted calls from Senate Republicans for fiscal responsibility and reduced spending on programs for non-citizens.

As planting season begins in Illinois, farmers are using tractors, planters, and other equipment on the state's roads. The American Farm Bureau Federation reminds drivers to exercise caution around slow-moving farm equipment to maintain roadway safety.
